Dare To Believe When Trust Is Broken

Our core trust should be in the Lord and him alone. He will never let us down.

We also have to trust our leaders, our parents, and friends and so on. So what do you do when that trust is broken? What does a husband/wife do when their partner cheats? What does a parent do when their child is raped/molested by a relative or friend? What can you do when you are betrayed by your family members? What do you do when a Pastor divulges privileged information that you shared trusting they are your leader? What do you do when your leaders offend you? What do you do when a congregant betrays you as a pastor?

I can go on and on with these questions. The point is that somewhere in the course of our lives people who we have trusted will let us down. We don’t like to talk about sour topics but we can’t run away from them. At a certain point in our lives trust will be broken.

Let’s take Joseph as an example. His brothers were jealous of him and wanted to kill him but eventually sold him into slavery. Let’s take a look at the story in Genesis 37:23-36

And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stripped Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colours that was on him; And they took him, and cast him into a pit: and the pit was empty, there was no water in it. And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a company of Ishmeelites came from Gilead with their camels bearing spicery and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt. And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood? Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content. Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt. And Reuben returned unto the pit; and, behold, Joseph was not in the pit; and he rent his clothes. And he returned unto his brethren, and said, The child is not; and I, whither shall I go? And they took Joseph’s coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood; And they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father; and said, This have we found: know now whether it be thy son’s coat or no. And he knew it, and said, It is my son’s coat; an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces. And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days. And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning. Thus his father wept for him. And the Midianites sold him into Egypt unto Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh’s, and captain of the guard.

Can you even begin to imagine what was going on in Joseph’s mind at this point? His own brothers had sold him into slavery. Apart from the degradation of the favored son of an influential man being made a slave, think of the heartbreak and agony of knowing your own family has sold you into slavery.

Now in this case Joseph’s brothers betrayed both their brother and their father. At the time the father did not know what had transpired but Joseph did and I can only begin to imagine his thoughts and feelings on his way to Egypt. Being in chains did not help the situation.

Life eventually gets better for Joseph. He begins to rise in the house of his master Potiphar. However a problem arises as Potiphar’s wife continually seduces him to sleep with her but he refuses. The wife eventually accuses Joseph of trying to rape her and he is sent to prison for a crime he did not commit. This is the second time that the trust was broken. If Joseph had been someone else he would have easily given up on life. The challenge of having trust broken is if you are not careful it changes your perspective of life, it changes the way you see people.

So Joseph is in prison. And a third opportunity arises for him to trust again. He interprets the dreams of the baker and wine bearer of Pharaoh. He tells the wine bearer that once he is restored to his post according to the interpretation of Joseph he should make mention of Joseph to Pharaoh. Unfortunately the wine bearer forgets Joseph and for the third time trust is broken again. It took 2 full years for the wine bearer to remember Joseph and this only after Pharaoh had a dream that his astrologers and magicians could not interpret. Can you imagine what went through Joseph’s head during these two years? Joseph was strong in faith!

We have to be strong in faith. We have to Dare To Believe that no matter what is done to us by other people, God sees all we go through and he will pull us through and raise us up. I understand why Joseph is in faith’s hall of fame. He was truly a man of faith.

Now here is the climax of the whole story. You will need to read Genesis 42-45, I will just glean gems from this whole story. In Genesis 42 the brothers of Joseph are sent to Egypt seeking grain. Joseph recognizes them but he does not immediately reveal himself to them. He had to test them first. When someone breaks your trust do not just quickly go back to them or give them your heart again, you have to observe them from a distance and go through a period of testing if they are worth you giving them your trust again. That is what Joseph did. First he spoke roughly to them. Why did he do this, he wanted to see their reaction. Remember Joseph knew his brothers very well. So he had to see if their hearts had changed or if they were still the same old same old. When someone has broken your trust you have to test them first to see if they are worth you trusting them again. Don’t be foolish and just trust again without proper due diligence.

Next he puts them all in prison for 3 days. This was all a test. On the third day he takes the brothers out of prison but then takes Simeon and keeps him in prison as security to ensure that the brothers would return. What is he doing here? He is trying to see where their loyalties lie. He is trying to bring out what is in their hearts. He also then puts back their monies that had come with to buy grain in Egypt. Before you trust again you have to really find out if a person has changed. Joseph had learnt his lessons. His trust had been broken 3 times and he had to make sure. But he still was believing for the best. That is what we have to do, we have to believe for the best in people but all this is done in wisdom.

The brothers return after some time, this time they return with the youngest brother Benjamin. They had not come with him on the first trip. Joseph new how he had been treated and he knew that Benjamin had taken his place as his father’s favorite. So now he had to put the brothers through one more test. He brings them into his house and serves them to a meal. He puts a penta-portion in Benjamin’s plate. Why is he doing this? He wants to see his brother’s reaction to seeing the younger brother being favored while they were treated ordinarily. Oh my Joseph was a man of wisdom. You have to focus on the weaknesses of the person who broke your trust before you can give them your trust again. Why do this? Because you want to test if they have changed yet. If they have not yet changed then they are not worth you giving them your trust again for it will surely be broken!

The final test is in Genesis 44. Joseph wants to see if his brothers have truly changed. He creates a scenario where he Benjamin is at fault and he wants to take him and says all the brothers can go their way. If they had not yet changed they would just have left Benjamin at the mercy of Joseph. But the brothers had changed. And that is all that Joseph needed to know. After this final test he then trusts the brothers again. When trust is broken its easy to get bitter and want revenge but you have to DARE TO BELIEVE and forgive and work towards building that trust again.

Whatever has been done to you I want you to know that in God there is redemption. Let us DARE TO BELIEVE!!!!!!!!!!!

Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us ( Ephesians 3:20 )

I have personally been going through a season when a lot of things I want to happen are not going my way and it has been a tough season. Questions arise: Can this dream truly come to pass. In the midst of all the doubts, the fears, the insecurities I found myself writing this:

Of this one thing i am confident and sure, in this one thing i find peace and rest:MY GOD IS ABLE! #DareToBelieve

Life is never a walk in the park, and just because you believe in God and pray there is an intense warfare against your wellbeing and progress. But God! But God is Able. The scripture lets us know that he is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think. This blows my mind because I have audacious, big dreams that sometimes scare me because I never dream small. So this is what blows my mind: God is able to do above and beyond what I can comprehend.

So my part now is to just Dare To Believe that what God has said, he can deliver. This is where most of us miss it. We do not believe. But we have to believe for whosoever cometh to God must believe that he is and that he is a rewarder of those that diligently seek him.

Life will never be easy. That I can guarantee you. Things will not always go your way. That I can also guarantee you. Hardships, sickness, turmoil and all kinds of adversities will try to rock your faith. All you have to know is that God Is Able!

Are you sick today? Believe God is able to heal and stand so strongly upon that truth until the facts align with the truth. Yes you might be feeling pain in your body, it can be tough, it might seem like you won’t make it BUT God is Able and he has the final word.

Are you financially challenged? Money not coming through. School fees are not coming together and you are so stressed. Is your business on the verge of collapse and you have lost all hope. Take a moment to reconsider: GOD IS ABLE

Whatever your circumstance, whatever your predicament, whatever your ailment God is able to deal with it. Is there anything too hard for this omnipotent God? NO!!!!!!!!!!!!

#TheAppleEvent And How We Can Take Advantage of Technology

#TheAppleEvent And How We Can Take Advantage of Technology

Yesterday I watched the Apple Event live from my phone. There was quite a lot of hype on the internet regarding this event as people were looking forward to what innovations Apple has in store for us. Amongst the highlights were:

  • Apple watch
  • iPad Pro
  • Apple pencil
  • Apple TV
  • iPhone 6s & 6s plus

My aim in this post is not to highlight what happened at the apple event but to use that as a pedestal to talk about how we can take advantage of the innovations and advances in technology in our worship of God to bring him the glory and honor that he so rightly deserves.

Amongst the worship community there has been a lot of technology bashing going on with preachers claiming that a physical bible is the way to go because you can hear the pages turning, and you won’t be distracted by things like Facebook or twitter and so on, to people not wanting people to take videos of the worship and a whole lot of other things that different preachers and worship leaders have problems with.

I am here to say that Technology is not our foe, technology is not an enemy of the worship of God, it’s not an enemy of the worship experience. Instead of bashing technology what we should be asking ourselves is HOW CAN WE USE TECHNOLOGY TO ENHANCE OUR WORSHIP EXPERIENCE?

The devil is using technology to further his cause and the church is just making noise about how people are idolizing technology and such other statements. You can make all the noise you want until the cows come home but the truth is more and more people spend time on a computer, on a phone, a tablet and so on. People are not going to stop, with the way things are going more and more are going to be latching on. And even as the old technology averse generation is passing away the new technology hooked generation is rising up.

As more and more people spend times on their phones and devices, we as spiritual leaders should become innovative in our ways of connecting with the people we lead especially if you are leading a big church where you can’t interact with everyone physically but now technology avails you the opportunity to connect with everyone you lead and to be able to encourage, exhort, share and also get feedback and to know how the people you are leading are faring and to get feedback on the work that you are doing.

Take advantage of the following:

Now with periscope a preacher can connect with the congregation during the week. You don’t have to preach a sermon, you can just greet your followers, share a verse and encourage people for their day and then get feedback about what people are facing in their day. The worship leader can stream their practices or when they are writing a new song and so on. You can now even live stream an album launch for the musicians and get your music out there because the picture and video quality is getting better and better.

There is also where you can live stream your events either on youtube or on your website so that whoever did not come to church and also people from other nations can tune in to what God is doing.

As a leader be constantly interacting with those you lead on facebook, twitter, whatsapp, instagram and so on. Now technology gives us a chance to be with people everyday. It just doesn’t have to be on Sunday morning only, or at Wednesday bible study.

For worship leaders you can share your song list ideas during the week to your worship team, discuss keys and so on so that during rehearsal you do not have to go through all that. There are so many possible benefits.

Right now technology has given us a chance to minister to people we would never have been able to do so to. Lets use it to spread the fame of God in the earth, to make his praise glorious, to preach the gospel to every creature. Lets crowd the techno sphere with the word of God for it is more powerful than a two edged sword and it is able to do the work.

It is important to note that technology should never replace human interaction. However it can enhance human interaction.

Stop Unrighteousness & Oppression Part 1

Dare to believe you can stop unrighteousness & oppression

After the death of Pharaoh and when a new Pharaoh arose that knew not Joseph he started oppressing the Jews until the unrighteousness reached the stage of killing innocent babies because he was afraid of a surge in the population of Israel.

The Egyptian midwives are the first to dare to believe against this law as they see that it is wrong. In Exodus 1:17-21

But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive. And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said unto them, Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men children alive?

And the midwives said unto Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively, and are delivered ere the midwives come in unto them. Therefore God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty. And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them houses.

There is a reward that comes to you when you dare to believe.

Then comes Moses’s parents. They also dared to believe. They could not kill their child. And because of their faith God does something I love, he is the extraordinary strategist. He causes Moses to be found by Pharaohs daughter who then adopts him and he is raised in the house of the very person who is seeking the demise of the Israelite race. Not only this, Pharaohs daughter employs Moses mother to take care of her own son and pays her for this very service. O my O my, can you guys see the rewards of daring to believe God. Not only is Moses saved but the family also gets a financial reward for taking care of their own son while they properly teach him about his heritage and what they believed God had called him to do.

When Moses grows up he dares to believe that staying in the palace is not what God spared his life for, he refuses to be called the son of Pharaohs daughter. Surely this took some guts because not only did Moses put his life in danger, he was distancing himself from the most powerful family on the earth at that time because Egypt was a great nation and he was an adopted son of the daughters of one of the most powerful man on earth at the time. He however understood that there was an even more powerful being that resides in the heavenlies. Also he understood there is a reward for daring to believe.Hebrews 11: 23-27

By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king’s commandment. By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter;

Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward.

By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.

Eventually he comes back as a deliverer for the nation of Israel and he leads the nation of Israel out of slavery and towards the Promised Land.

In Esther’s time there arose a man by the name of Haman, a wicked man who tried to force people to respect him and when Mordecai refused to bow down he decided to commit genocide.2 people decide to stand up against this beast i.e Mordecai & Esther

After these things did king Ahasuerus promote Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, and advanced him, and set his seat above all the princes that were with him.

And all the king’s servants, that were in the king’s gate, bowed, and reverenced Haman: for the king had so commanded concerning him. But Mordecai bowed not, nor did him reverence.

Then the king’s servants, which were in the king’s gate, said unto Mordecai, Why  transgressest thou the king’s commandment?

Now it came to pass, when they spake daily unto him, and he hearkened not unto them, that they told Haman, to see whether Mordecai’s matters would stand: for he had told them that hewas a Jew.

And when Haman saw that Mordecai bowed not, nor did him reverence, then was Haman full of wrath.

And he thought scorn to lay hands on Mordecai alone; for they had shewed him the people of Mordecai: wherefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews that were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus, even the people of Mordecai.

Unrighteousness & oppression sometimes can be very subtle. I mean what would have Mordecai lost by just paying homage to Haman since it just happened in the space of maybe a few minutes as he was passing. Surely someone might think what would he have lost by just complying with the King’s command? Well for one he would have remained just as an ordinary member of the Kings court, he would not have entered into the inheritance that God had in store for him, and also he would have bowed down to an idol, because this is exactly what this was: idolatry! Yet Mordecai knew better, he knew the laws of his God and he stood for them.

The problem is when you dare to believe you will make a lot of people angry especially those who are being used by the devil or those who just don’t understand why you don’t flow with the tide, doing what everyone else is doing. But you see great people stand out of the crowd, they don’t follow the tide because if you do what everyone else is doing then you will get the results that everyone else is getting. So he gets into trouble but still he dares to believe that Esther has been called to the palace for such a time as this and instructs her to go unto the King. In Esther 4:7-17

And Mordecai told him of all that had happened unto him, and of the sum of the money that Haman had promised to pay to the king’s treasuries for the Jews, to destroy them.

Also he gave him the copy of the writing of the decree that was given at Shushan to destroy them, to shew it unto Esther, and to declare it unto her, and to charge her that she should go in unto the king, to make supplication unto him, and to make request before him for her people. And Hatach came and told Esther the words of Mordecai.

Again Esther spake unto Hatach, and gave him commandment unto Mordecai; All the king’s servants, and the people of the king’s provinces, do know, that whosoever, whether man or woman, shall come unto the king into the inner court, who is not called, there is one law of his to put him to death, except such to whom the king shall hold out the golden sceptre, that he may live: but I have not been called to come in unto the king these thirty days. And they told to Mordecai Esther’s words. Then Mordecai commanded to answer Esther, Think not with thyself that thou shalt escape in the king’s house, more than all the Jews. For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father’s house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?  Then Esther bade them return Mordecaithis answer, Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish. So Mordecai went his way, and did according to all that Esther had commanded him.
