Backing Tracks, Lip Syncing & Live Performance

In today’s modern worship environment technology is now highly affecting the way we worship. One such is the use of backing tracks.

So what is a backing track?A backing track is an audio or MIDI recording that musicians play or sing along to. Let’s look at some situations that warrant the use of backing tracks:

  • When there is no band available

If there is no band available to play for the singer then it naturally follows that the singer will use a backing track unless if they are comfortable performing an acapella act.

A lot of churches before they have a band will use backing tracks so as to have the energy that is provided by a band.

  • When you are playing with an amateur band

There is nothing annoying for a professional singer as an inexperienced band that will eventually destroy the singer’s performance by playing out of time, tune and not paying attention to detail and dynamics.

  • When finances do not allow for a live band

Sometimes the artist might be invited to a concert to perform a song but then they will not be affording to pay their band for that performance so they choose to use a backing track. This is very common in the church & church events as the musicians are not paid for their performance but it’s regarded more as a service to God.

  • To add extra instrumental/vocal tracks to a live performance

If the singer needs a choir and yet there is no choir present it naturally follows they will use backing tracks. Also there might be string/orchestra sections that the band cannot play.

  • For television programs

Many television programs require that acts perform only the vocals live to simplify the process of mixing the performance and so as to not compromise the quality of their show just in case blunders are made by the band!

What are the problems of using backing tracks in worship?

I feel backing tracks bring an artificialness to the worship. Everything is scripted, there is no room to allow the Holy Spirit to move because you have to follow the order that is on the track. Also you cannot adjust tempos. Sometimes the tempo that is on the cd just does not do it in the moment. With a live performance the band can adjust but with a backing track you are forced to the tempo that was used in the recording

LIP SYNCHING

Lip synclip-synclip-synch (short for lip synchronization) is a technical term for matching lip movements with pre-recorded sung or spoken vocals that the listeners hear through speakers, either through PA system speakers in a “live” performance or television or cinema speakers in the case of a lip-synced TV show or film performance. The term can refer to any of a number of different techniques and processes, in the context of live performances and recordings.

My question is in the context of worship should the church be allowed to lip sync. I know of big churches who have announced to their congregants that they are doing a Live DVD recording when all they were doing was lip syncing. My problem with this is firstly that announcing to be doing a live concert when you are lip syncing is deception and a church should be honest in its dealing. Secondly the question now arises: Is this experience a worship experience or it’s just an event? Should this be allowed in the church?

Join me in the next article where i will be talking more about this and how it affects our modern day worship.

Dare To Stand Your Ground

In 2 Samuel 23:9-10

And after him was Eleazar the son of Dodo the Ahohite, one of the three mighty men with David, when they defied the Philistines that were there gathered together to battle, and the men of Israel were gone away: He arose, and smote the Philistines until his hand was weary, and his hand clave unto the sword: and the LORD wrought a great victory that day; and the people returned after him only to spoil.

Another in 2 Samuel 23:11-12

And after him was Shammah the son of Agee the Hararite. And the Philistines were gathered together into a troop, where was a piece of ground full of lentiles: and the people fled from the Philistines. But he stood in the midst of the ground, and defended it, and slew the Philistines: and the LORD wrought a great victory.

Too many people constantly live life in retreat. What do I mean by this? Many people when faced with a problem will bolt, their response to a challenge is running away. It takes an extra-ordinary courage to stand your ground like these two men whose story is told in second Samuel.

In this season devoid of heroes, a season just left with people seeking to merely exist and not live life to the full may mighty people arise who will stand against injustice, stand against whatever may be coming against them.

One thing is that God blesses faith, God is a rewarder of those who walk by faith, those who dare to believe. May you stand your ground the next time you are faced with an onslaught!

The Creative Process

Creativity is derived from the word create. God is the most creative person and we can see that from all that he created. Our father wants us to be creative like him.

Creativity is a vital part of music. We need creativity in songwriting, creativity in the band, creativity with the vocalists.

Sometimes the creative process might seem like a waste of time but most of the times you will go through various silly ideas to finally get to what you need.

What is entailed in the creative process:

  1. Risk Taking
  2. Experimentation
  3. Testing
  4. Feedback & Application

What can help the creative process?

  • Atmosphere
  • Fun

Creativity thrives in fun atmospheres. If people are all uptight that will hinder creativity to come out.

  • Paying attention to detail.
  • Contributions in the case of a team
  • Constant Practice

For teams disagreements are actually part of the creative process. You will first fight over certain parts of the song, one person will say my idea is the one that works, someone else will say no that will not work and you will go back and forth. This is not bad for it will cause the best idea to come out.

Hindrances though to the creative process are yes men. Having one dominant individual and a group of minions who don’t think but just agree with everything that is pitched means good ideas will not receive the light of day, it’s like a rigged election.

In a team setting having too many people at a rehearsal who are not playing or singing anything may actually hinder the creative process. Sometimes you have to take the select few and then work on stuff and then eventually bring it to the whole team.

What would you say is part of the creative process for your team? Look forward to hear your thoughts on this matter.

Dare To Believe In The Face Of Discouragement

Dark days will come, there will be days when hope is lost, there will be seasons when you will be discouraged for one reason or another. Because of the state of this world time and time again we will gravitate towards being discouraged.

Psalms 42

To the chief Musician, Maschil, for the sons of Korah. As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God? My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday. Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.O my God, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember thee from the land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites, from the hill Mizar.Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me. Yet the LORD will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life.I will say unto God my rock, Why hast thou forgotten me? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy? As with a sword in my bones, mine enemies reproach me; while they say daily unto me, Where is thy God?Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.

As i read this Psalm i see a man who is discouraged and i understand completely as i am in one of my own seasons of such a state. One thing i know though is that my hope is in the Lord, all i have to do is take heart, all i need to do is to believe that God has a grand plan, he did say in Jeremiah that he has plans for me, plans for good and not for evil, for a future and an expected end. So when discouragement comes what do i do. I encourage myself in the Lord.

Like David in 1 Samuel 30 after Ziklag had been burned, his wives and the wives of his men had been taken and now the people spoke of stoning him. David was greatly distressed. This was a disappointing moment, it was a stressful time. David could have wallowed in self pity but he chose the high road, he dared to believe even in the face of this situation that he was encountering. He sought the Lord, he encouraged himself in the Lord.

Saints this is what we have to do. Seek God, worship him in the face of our disappointments. God is faithful.

Sometimes a disappointment will come after a great victory. In 1 Kings 19 after Elijah had killed all the prophets of Baal and the Lord had answered him by fire, Jezebel threatens his life. The prophet runs away and the Lord asks him a question and in his answer is found his disappointment

And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away. ( 1 Kings 19:10 )

Discouragement comes about because we will be telling ourselves that we have done so many things and we do not understand how things could be happening in a contrary manner, or not moving as we expected. Life will never go the way we plan or the way we desire. However like the Psalmist said, hope in God for you shall again praise him.

Whatever you are going through today, just encourage yourself in the Lord. Dare To Believe in the face of discouragement.

Be Cool & Stay Calm

Life would be so much easier if only people could keep their cool. Relationships would be so much sweeter if couples could learn the art of staying calm. Wars and fights could be averted if only people would not be easily ticked off.

It takes a lot of courage to stay calm, the easy thing is to be irritated, the easy thing is to retaliate, the easy thing is to always let out the steam. Our world would be such a better place if we could learn the art of staying calm.

How many times have relationships ended, marriages been ruined all because a spouse rashly speaks in the moment words that they cannot take back. If they only would have waited a few minutes, gathered the courage to be calm and silent all that would have been averted.

Nations have gone to war all because of silly issues and thousands and millions pay the price for leaders who fail to muster the courage to stay calm and seek the road less travelled, seek to understand rather than be understood, seek peace rather than war. If we can teach our children the ability to stay calm there will be less fights and scuffles at school. In the workplace keeping calm would create such a lovely workplace and productivity would drastically increase, customers would be very happy and business would flourish.

This one day I was having a challenge with internet and this was really getting on my nerves. Unfortunately this irritation also started to manifest itself in my interaction with the people I was with as I was now highly irritable. In the midst of this I had a revelation.

Developing the ability to stay calm under pressure situations means that you are less likely to suffer from the effects of stress, anxiety and worry. Your calm approach will also lead to better health and higher levels of productivity. It will provide you with a sense of control over the events and circumstances of your life, and most certainly a better sense of control over yourself, your thoughts and emotions. On top of this, staying calm under pressure will help improve your ability to focus on the right things, at the right time, and in the right way. It will allow you to better communicate your needs to other people, and help you make more effective, intelligent and emotional-free decisions.

The one certainty about life is that it will put you under intense pressure — forcing you to make tough decisions that will either hurt or hinder your progress. And when emotions get the better of you, you will most likely fail to capitalize on your greatest opportunities moving forward. In fact, your ability to stay calm under pressure could be the difference between the success you desire to create in your life, and complete and utter failure.

Would you Dare to believe to stay calm today?
